  62.                 In the small scope of things, Rheingold  miss mark

  72.                 experience. I would do it again. I had

  76.                 "The main mistake I made was taking a
  77.                 million dollars because that put us on
  78.                 track of building a company worth $10
  79.                 million. Then I took another $10
  80.                 million and that made it on track to
  81.                 build a $20 million company. When you
  82.                 take $2 million from a venture
  83.                 capitalist, they want $20 million in
  84.                 three to five years."

  86.                 Just a year ago, when Rheingold
  87.                 announced E-Minds, his talk was heady
  88.                 and philosophical, full of the promise
  89.                 of the new medium. "There something
  90.                 happening out there," he said at the
  91.                 time. "There's a real fervor for
  92.                 many-to-many communications--grassroots
  93.                 communication, not just Time Warner or
  94.                 Microsoft giving us their slick version
  95.                 of communication...We want to bring
  96.                 that grassroots social community to the
  97.                 Web."

  99.                 These days, Rheingold is settling back
  100.                 into his home office in the hamlet of
  101.                 Mill Valley, California, and do what he
  102.                 does best: build online communities on
  103.                 a small scale without the need for big
  104.                 money.

  106.                 Rheingold will consult with Durand for
  107.                 a few months and will probably continue
  108.                 consulting with others about the social
  109.                 aspects of virtual communities.

  111.                 But when it comes to building new
  112.                 enterprises, he's keeping it small. He
  113.                 said he'll be buying a conferencing
  114.                 system and will then see if he can get
  115.                 a few people to subscribe to his Web
  116.                 site for about $10 a month. "Maybe I
  117.                 can get a few subscribers and maybe I
  118.                 can bootstrap something," he said.

  120.                 As far as the E-Minds sale goes,
  121.                 Rheingold declined to give precise
  122.                 figures. He did say that the money will
  123.                 cover some but not all of E-Minds'
  124.                 debts. "I can't disclose the amount of
  125.                 cash, but anything more we can pay our
  126.                 creditors is worth the trouble."

  128.                 Durand, which runs the CommunityWare
  129.                 site, will acquire E-Minds' trademark
  130.                 and logo (which Rheingold said cost in
  131.                 the neighborhood of $25,000), as well
  132.                 as its domain name.

  134.                 It also has the right to send one email
  135.                 message to all who registered with
  136.                 Electric Minds, Rheingold added. "I'm
  137.                 really adamant that we are not selling
  138.                 our database. It's really a sacred
  139.                 trust."

  141.                 As far as equipment goes, suffice it to
  142.                 say Durand won't have to worry about
  143.                 moving costs: It will take possession
  144.                 of E-Minds' server, which was on loan
  145.                 from Sun Microsystems and move it to
  146.                 its Santa Barbara office.

  148.                 Other than the server, there is no more
  149.                 in the way of hardware to take away.
  150.                 E-Minds liquidated its assets when it
  151.                 ran into financial trouble, according
  152.                 to Rheingold. Most of the staff, which
  153.                 underwent layoffs in April, have
  154.                 already found new jobs.

  156.                 Rheingold is also encouraging E-Minds'
  157.                 president, Wendy York-Fess, who he said
  158.                 has gotten all sorts of job offers, to
  159.                 consult with Durand as well.

  161.                 After all that is done, he said, the
  162.                 future is a bit up in the air.
